While everyone’s favorite far, far away galaxy might seem somewhat removed from the daily grind here on Earth, the world of Star Wars actually intersects with coffee more often than you might think!
Question: How does Darth Vader take his coffee?
The Barista-Named Planet
According to reports, the latest installment in the Star Wars film collection, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, had a stranger connection to coffee than anyone could have predicted. While on set, the director, Gareth Edwards, called in a coffee order. The barista who took the order wrote the word “Scarif” on the cup (presumably mishearing Edwards’ first name and taking a wild guess at it). The cast and crew had a good laugh when the coffee arrived and was presented to “Scarif” Edwards, but the director saw potential in the mixup: the odd word was actually a perfect fit for the as-yet-unnamed planet in Rogue One where the first Death Star was constructed. So, in a classic case of life imitating art, a Star Wars planet was christened Scarif—and all thanks to a barista goof.
Merchandising, Merchandising, Merchandising
Of course, the films that essentially invented movie merchandising have quite a lot to offer with regard to Star Wars-themed coffee products. There’s countless mugs offering cute puns (“May The Froth Be With You”, “The Brew Is Strong in This One”). There’s also the sleek and dishwasher-safe R2D2 Coffee Press from Hammacher ($39.95). While this little droid sadly doesn’t contain stolen Death Star plans or a map to Luke Skywalker’s whereabouts, it does brew a 32-ounce mug of “Jedi-worthy” coffee.
Coffee Cocktails from The Mos Eisley Cantina
What fun is a day of Star Wars coffee without a nightcap or two? Bartenders have recently joined in the fun, spinning off some original cocktails that incorporate coffee. One, Kieran Stephens of The Station Hotel (Rothes, Speyside, Scotland), recently made headlines with the Wookie Fuzzball, a drink he created in honor of everyone’s favorite walking carpet, Chewbacca.
Chewbacca’s partner Han Solo, himself no stranger to the dark corners of unsavory saloons, has also been honored with his own dangerous coffee beverage, called simply The Han Solo or The Harrison Ford.
